9/9 – Leafleting Against SB1070 at Debate Featuring SB1070 Author Michael Hethmon

On September 9, Michael Hethmon, one of the people who drafted Arizona’s racist, anti-immigrant law SB1070, will be speaking at a debate at University of St. Thomas’s downtown Minneapolis campus starting at 5:00 pm. Join us to hand out flyers to the people there about our BAM! campaign to stop SB1070 and all anti-immigrant laws, from Arizona to Minnesota. We’ll mainly be flyering as people leave at the end of the event. Look for us! Event at the Schulze Grand Atrium at UST School of Law, 1000 Lasalle Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55403. Event information: http://bit.ly/c4YUsT

9/12 – 12 – 7 pm – MIRAc booth at Mexican Independence Day Parade

Stop by and say hi or help out to spread the word about the Boycott Arizona-MN (BAM!) campaign for a bit at MIRAc’s booth at the Mexican Independence Day parade on Lake Street this year. Look for our booth along Lake Street near 4th Avenue, Minneapolis. Parade info: http://golatino.org

Demand to know where the candidates stand on immigrants rights issues in Minnesota — the SB1070 copycat bill (HF3830), drivers licenses for all, and collaboration between ICE and local police. Join MIRAc and others to have a visible immigrant rights presence at the governor’s candidates debate between Dayton (DFL), Emmer (GOP) and Horner (I). The debate is at Pantages Theater (710 Hennepin Ave., downtown Mpls) on Wednesday, Sept. 15. Meet outside by 6:30 p.m. for picketing.

Thursday, August 26
6:00 pm
El Colegio Charter School
42nd & Bloomington, Minneapolis

On July 29, SB1070 partially went into effect. People outraged at this racist, anti-immigrant law went to Arizona from all over the US to protest that day, including four members of U of M SDS. Come hear their report back about what they saw and participated in there. Hear about the inspiring grassroots movement in Arizona to fight back against racist, anti-immigrant laws and fight for legalization and full equality for all.

Cosponsored by U of M Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAc)

When: Wed Aug 11 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Where: Graves 601 Hotel – 601 North 1st Avenue

On August 11th, the owners of every MLB team in the nation will be in Minneapolis for their quarterly owners conference.

Join us as we team up with Movethegame.org to demand that the all-star game be moved out of Arizona unless SB1070 is fully repealed!

This is a great opportunity to keep the pressure on the MLB and Bud Selig to take a stand for human rights, and send Arizona a message (est. $60 Million loss in revenue) that we will not tolerate hateful laws.

Sponsored by MIRAc, BAM!, and MoveTheGame.org

For more info go to: www.Movethegame.org

When: Thu Aug 5 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Where: Target – Lake St. and Hiawatha
Why: Target donated $150,000 to MN Forward, for an ad on behalf of anti-immigrant, anti-gay, and anti-minimum wage Republican candidate for governor Tom Emmer.

Join us to demand Target stop funding this extremist candidate!

Anti-Immigrant: Emmer says that AZ law SB1070 is a wonderful first step, and continues to be a vocal supporter of it, even after a court has ruled much of the bill to be unconstitutional and promoting of racial profiling.

Anti-LGBTQ: Emmer supports a Christian rock band in Minnesota that travels around the state saying that it’s moral and righteous for religious people to kill gays and lesbians.

Anti-Minimum Wage: Emmer has said he wants to cut minimum for servers, claiming many make over $100,000 a year.

Keep corporate cash out of our elections! This donation makes Target one of the very first companies to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision allowing unlimited corporate cash in elections.

Bring signs and friends!

This is a video made from the MIRAc & BAM! campaign protest in St. Paul, MN on July 29, 2010. This is the guerrilla theater that was part of the protest. Stop the epidemic of anti-immigrant laws! Repeal SB1070 in AZ, repeal 287g, stop HF3830 in MN!

MIRAc/BAM!:  Bolton ruling on SB1070 is a “wonderful first step” but just the beginning, Thursday protest in St. Paul demanding justice in Arizona goes forward

(Wednesday July 28, 2010) Minneapolis—Following the ruling by U.S, District Judge Susan Bolton that has temporarily blocked the implementation of four key sections of S.B. 1070, pending additional judicial review, the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAc) and the Boycott Arizona-MN (BAM!) campaign issued the following statement:

“Our planned rally 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night at the Minnesota state capitol will go on as planned. The ruling is a wonderful first step, but it doesn’t go far enough. SB1070 needs to be fully repealed, not just have a few parts of it temporarily delayed. We are united in opposing this law—and copycat bills introduced elsewhere like Minnesota’s HF3830—that impose a new system of Jim Crow-like laws. We agree with this section of Judge Bolton’s opinion :

“There is a substantial likelihood that officers will wrongfully arrest legal resident aliens under the new (law),” Bolton ruled. “By enforcing this statute, Arizona would impose a ‘distinct, unusual and extraordinary’ burden on legal resident aliens that only the federal government has the authority to impose.”

It’s good that the ruling temporarily stops some of the worst parts of SB1070. But there’s a much larger problem. We will continue our fight on the national level for legalization for all and for a stop to raids and deportations that are tearing apart families daily. Moreover, we seek a repeal of NAFTA and other similar corporate trade agreements that have devastated economies in both the U.S., by sending jobs overseas, and in Mexico and throughout Latin America, forcing massive numbers of people to migrate to the U.S. to provide for themselves and their families.

Last night, some left the hearing in tears as Lino Lakes became the first city in Minnesota to pass an “English-only” law.  Under the ordinance, government money cannot be spent to translate city documents and all town meetings must be in English with no translation.  This is the latest outrageous attack on immigrants and people of color that comes as Arizona prepares to enact SB1070 this Thursday, a law that will require police to “check the papers” of anyone who looks like an immigrant.

We no longer afford to stand by and watch as our communities face an all out assault by blatantly racist forces that want to see families torn apart.  There is too much at stake with the SB1070 copycat bill HF3830 here in Minnesota, along with other programs like 287g and the Criminal Alien Program that turn local police into immigration agents.

Please join us this Thursday, July 29th at 6:00pm at the State Capitol to stand up with people all over the country and say NO to this wave of hateful anti-immigrant extremism that threatens Arizona, Minnesota, and the entire nation.

Minnesota Says “NO” — National Day of Action Against SB1070
July 29 · 6:00pm – 7:30pm
State Capitol, St. Paul MN

Tell Minnesota to STOP the spread of racist, anti-immigrant laws!
NO to SB1070, NO to HF3830, NO to secure communities, NO to 287g!

July 29th is the day SB1070 is set to go into effect. Our community is calling for us to take to the streets and show Minnesota that we will not stand for these hateful laws and demand a real solution to this broken system – federal immigration reform with legalization and full equality.

These laws do not address reform in a productive way. Instead, they tear families apart, criminalize our mothers, deport our brothers, and arrest our neighbors. It’s time we say- ENOUGH!

—————–
